Marcus Bell

Staff Writer

Marcus Bell spent nine years pulling low-voltage wire for a security contractor outside Phoenix, Arizona, where he helped install and service somewhere north of 400 residential alarm systems before he ever wrote a word about one. He is not an engineer and does not claim to be. What he has is the memory of every job that went sideways: the panel mounted where nobody could reach it, the siren wired to a circuit a burglar could kill from the breaker box, the sensor that false-tripped every afternoon because somebody put it above a heat vent. He now covers wired and hybrid security systems, outdoor cameras and professional monitoring for BeSafe Home Security. Living in the Valley has made him the resident expert on heat: 115-degree summers cook camera batteries, soften the adhesive on stick-up mounts and shorten the life of anything sitting in direct afternoon sun on a west-facing wall. If a product survives a Phoenix July on his own garage, it will survive almost anywhere. Marcus owns a 1978 ranch house in Mesa with plaster walls and no neutral wires, which is the kind of place most smart-home marketing quietly pretends does not exist. He tests in it anyway.
