Your Straight Answer on Home Security Gear
BeSafe Home Security exists to cut the time it takes to buy the right thing. We compare and review the equipment that protects a house and the people in it: alarm systems, security cameras, video doorbells, smart locks, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, water leak sensors, safes and emergency equipment.
Between the four of us we have about 45 years of installing, breaking and living with this gear in our own homes, across four very different American climates. We are not a security company, a dealer or a lead generator. Nothing you do on this site will get you a sales call.
Easily Accessible Information
Our commitment is to report what we found honestly, including the parts manufacturers would rather we left out. Every guide names the drawbacks, names who should skip a product, and tells you when the right answer is the cheaper option or no purchase at all.
We write for the person standing in an aisle or staring at a product page with a decision to make today, not for someone who wants to read a spec sheet twice.
Our Beginnings
This site started with a break-in and a bad purchase.
In 2023 one of our writers had a garage cleaned out overnight. He had a camera pointed at that garage. The footage was useless: 640p, backlit, no faces, and a motion zone so badly tuned the camera had logged 90 alerts that night and recorded the wrong 20 seconds. The product had been well reviewed everywhere he looked. Every one of those reviews had clearly been written from the box copy.
When he went looking for better information, what he found was a wall of articles ranking the same five products in the same order, almost always the five that paid the most. Nobody mentioned what a camera does at twenty below. Nobody mentioned that a smart lock fails because the door is swollen, not because the lock is bad. Nobody admitted they had never installed the thing.
So we built the site we had wanted: four people who actually mount the hardware, in four climates that break different things, telling you what happened.
Our Mission
To help ordinary homeowners and renters choose safety equipment they will still trust in two years, using plain language, disclosed drawbacks, verifiable sources and no scare tactics.
Fear sells security products. We would rather you bought less and bought right. Most homes get the biggest real gain from three unglamorous things: a camera covering the front door, a working smoke and CO alarm on every floor, and a lock nobody forgets to set.
The Numbers Behind This Site
We publish only figures we can account for. These describe our team’s background, not a marketing claim:
- 4 writers, each covering only the categories their own experience supports
- ~45 years of combined hands-on experience installing and living with this equipment
- 400+ residential alarm systems installed or serviced by our wired-systems writer during nine years in the trade
- 4 U.S. climates tested in: desert heat, deep cold, humid Southeast, Gulf Coast storm season
You will not find a “10,000 hours of research” figure here, because we have no way to verify one and neither would you.
Meet Our Team
Four homeowners, four climates, four lanes. Nobody writes outside their own experience.
- Marcus Bell — Phoenix, AZ. Wired and hybrid systems, outdoor cameras, professional monitoring. Nine years pulling low-voltage wire for a security contractor.
- Dana Whitfield — Minneapolis, MN. Renter-friendly setups, battery cameras, video doorbells, privacy policies. Eleven years of no-drill rental installs, and the person who reads the fine print on where your footage goes.
- Ray Okafor — Atlanta, GA. Smart locks, deadbolts, garage access, package theft. A decade of hanging doors and fitting locksets on volunteer builds.
- Jenna Castellano — Tampa, FL. Smoke and CO alarms, leak sensors, extinguishers, safes, child safety, emergency preparedness. Fifteen years of running a busy household through hurricane seasons.
Why We Only Cover Home Security and Safety
We deliberately stay in one lane: home security and automation, safety detection, and family and personal safety at home. We do not review phones, headphones, kitchen gadgets or anything else that happens to be trending.
Narrow coverage is the only way four people can honestly claim hands-on knowledge. A site that reviews everything has tested almost nothing.
Why We Do Not Sell Anything
We do not manufacture, sell, install or monitor anything. We have no storefront, no dealer agreement and no monitoring contract to protect. When we recommend a product we link you to the retailer and the transaction is between you and them.
That matters because it removes the most common conflict in this industry. A dealer site recommends what it sells. We have nothing to sell you.
How We Make Money
Affiliate commissions. If you buy through a link here, the retailer pays us a small percentage at no extra cost to you, and the price you pay is the same.
What that money does not buy is a ranking, a score, inclusion in a guide or an advance look at an article. We frequently put cheaper products that pay us less at the top of a list, because that was the right answer.

Common Questions
What do you cover?
Home security systems and cameras, video doorbells, smart locks and entry, smoke and CO detection, water leak sensors, safes, and family and personal safety at home.
Do you actually test the products?
Most of them, yes — bought at retail, installed by us, used at home for weeks to months. When an article is based on research instead of hands-on use, it says so at the top in those words. We do not run a laboratory and we never publish a measurement we did not take.
How do you score products?
With the BeSafe Score, a 1 to 10 rating built from installation on a real house, everyday reliability, weather performance, safety certification, subscription value and long-term ownership. Nothing gets a 10. Details here.
Can a company pay to be recommended?
No. Not for a position, a score, inclusion or an advance review. We accept no sponsored posts and no supplied content.
Do you accept free products?
We buy at retail wherever we can. When a manufacturer sends a review unit, the article discloses it, and it earns no better score.
Are you experts?
We are experienced users, not credentialed professionals. We are not engineers, electricians, fire marshals or law enforcement, and we say so in every article where it matters. For code compliance, hardwired alarms or electrical work, use a licensed professional.
Something here is wrong. Now what?
Tell us and we will fix it. Corrections go to the top of the pile, and significant ones are noted in the article rather than quietly edited out.
Can you help with my existing contract or service call?
No — we are an editorial site, not a provider. Contact the company directly. In an emergency, call 911.
