These are the rules our writers work under. They exist so you can tell the difference between a recommendation we stand behind and marketing copy with a star rating on it. If you ever think we have fallen short of them, tell us.
Our Beginnings
This site was built after a break-in, a useless camera recording and a long search through review articles that had obviously been written from box copy. We decided the missing ingredient was simple: somebody who had actually mounted the thing. Everything below follows from that.
We cover home security and automation, safety detection, and family and personal safety at home. We have deliberately not expanded past that.
Our Mission
To help homeowners and renters choose safety equipment they will still trust in two years, using plain language, disclosed drawbacks and verifiable sources, without using fear to sell.
Our Code of Ethics
Six values, in the order they break ties:
- Safety. This site covers products people rely on in an emergency. When safety and commercial interest conflict, safety wins without discussion.
- Independence. No brand buys a position, a score or inclusion. Nobody outside our team reads an article before it publishes.
- Honesty about limits. We say what we did not test, what we are not qualified to judge, and what we got wrong.
- Accuracy. Every figure is measured by us or attributed to a named source. No exceptions.
- Usefulness. A guide that does not help someone decide today has failed, however thorough it looks.
- Plain language. No jargon for its own sake, no padding, no drama.
Our Commitment to Transparency
Affiliate disclosure appears at the top of every article containing affiliate links and in our full disclosure. Every pick lists its drawbacks and who should skip it. Every article carries a byline, a publish date and a last-updated date. Where a product was supplied by a manufacturer rather than bought by us, the article says so.
Why We Only Focus on Home and Personal Safety
Four people cannot honestly claim hands-on knowledge across a dozen categories. Staying narrow is what lets us say we installed it. A site that reviews everything has tested almost nothing.
Why We Do Not Sell Products or Services
We do not manufacture, sell, install or monitor anything, and we hold no dealer or monitoring agreements. We link to retailers; the transaction is between you and them. This removes the biggest conflict of interest in the home security industry, which is that most sites recommending a system are trying to sell you that system.
Our Methodology and Editorial Standards
Our Approach
Every article is written by the team member whose own experience covers that category, then checked against primary documentation — manuals, certification listings, firmware notes and recall databases — before it publishes.
How We Find the Products We Cover
We start from the problem, not the product. The question is never “which camera should we write about this week,” it is “what does somebody with a dark driveway actually need.” From there we build a shortlist from what people are buying and asking about, what is in stock at normal retail, and what covers a genuine range of budgets. A guide that only recommends premium gear is a wish list, not a guide.
How We Research and Test
We buy at retail, install on our own houses, and use the product for weeks to months. We also test in four different climates on purpose, because a product can pass in mild weather and fail at twenty below or in Gulf Coast humidity. Full process here.
Where we have not used a product ourselves, the article states that it is research-based, in those words, at the top. We will not use “tested” for something we only read about.
How We Rank Products
Ranking factors, weighted roughly in this order: real-world reliability, installation on an actual house, safety certification, weather performance, false-alert behavior, what the hardware does with no subscription, long-term durability and support, then price and value.
About the BeSafe Score
Products we have used hands-on receive a BeSafe Score from 1 to 10, built from six components:
- Installation — fit and difficulty on real walls, doors and siding, with no professional help
- Everyday reliability — uptime, false alerts, app behavior, how it survives firmware updates
- Weather and durability — measured performance in our climates, not the box rating
- Safety and certification — the applicable standard (UL 217, UL 2034, ANSI/BHMA grade and so on) and whether it is verifiable
- Cost of ownership — what it does without a subscription, contract terms, price after year one
- Support and longevity — warranty, parts, firmware history, how the company treats discontinued lines
Two rules we do not bend: nothing receives a 10, and a product in a life-safety category with no certification we can verify receives no score at all and does not appear in a recommendation. A research-based article carries no BeSafe Score, and says why.
Fact-Checking and Page Updates
Before publishing and at every update we re-check prices, current model numbers, certification listings and the CPSC recall database. We revisit guides on a rolling basis and whenever something material changes. We update the date when the substance changes, never merely to look fresh.
Our Policy on Taste and Tact
No profanity. No fear-based language, crime-scene imagery or implied threats to your family to drive a purchase. No absolute promises about performance — no product “will keep intruders out” or “will protect your family.” No mocking a reader for not knowing something. We write about burglary, fire and medical emergencies, and real people have lived through those.
Plagiarism Policy
All content here is original. Verbatim wording from a manufacturer is acceptable only for technical specifications, certification language and legal terms, and is attributed where it is not obviously a spec. We do not republish, reword or lightly rewrite another publisher’s article, including competitors in this niche. We have zero tolerance for plagiarism, and it ends a writing relationship here.
Who We Trust and Why
Our Own Installations
Our notes from our own houses come first, because they are the only evidence we can fully account for.
Government and Standards Bodies
For safety and statistical claims we use primary sources and name them: the National Fire Protection Association, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and its recall database, UL Solutions standards, the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting program, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Manufacturer Documentation
We trust manuals, spec sheets and firmware release notes for specifications, pricing and feature lists, and we check them against what the product actually does. Marketing pages are not documentation.
Verified Customer Reviews
We read long-term owner reviews selectively, weighted by recency and by whether the reviewer describes an actual installation. They are useful for spotting patterns — hardware loosening, seals failing, support going quiet — and are never the sole basis for a recommendation.
Sources We Do Not Trust
- Press releases and brand marketing pages treated as fact
- Affiliate roundups with no stated methodology, which is most of this niche
- Incentivized or clearly solicited retailer reviews
- Anonymous forum posts and personal blogs with no verifiable author
- Statistics with no primary source, including figures circulating widely in security marketing
- Our own older articles, unless re-verified at the time of the update
How We Keep This Site Free for You
Affiliate commissions pay for the site. When you buy through a link the retailer pays us a small percentage, at no extra cost to you and with no change to your price.
External Relationships
- No sponsored content and no supplied or guest articles.
- No paywall.
- No products or services sold by us.
- No dealer, monitoring or lead-generation relationships.
- No payment accepted for a ranking, a score, inclusion or favorable coverage.
- No advance copy, approval or veto given to any company.
- Commission rates are not consulted when deciding what to recommend or how to order a list.
Corrections and Reader Feedback
We get things wrong. When we do, we fix it, and significant corrections are noted in the article rather than quietly edited out. Corrections are the fastest route to our attention, ahead of everything else in the inbox.
We do not publish invented reader quotes, and we do not present manufacturer-supplied praise as independent feedback. If we quote a reader, it is a real message and we have their permission.
